Miss Beatrice Waight

Ancient Mayan Healing for Reproductive and Digestive Issues.

This article was in Innerself Magazine Autumn Edition 2011

While traveling in Central America during 2009 Fiona House decided to search out a traditional healer.   In a small village in the highlands of Belize, Fiona’s path crossed with Miss Beatrice Waight, who was a fifth generation traditional Mayan healer.  Miss Beatice opened Fiona’s awareness to an ancient style of Mayan Abdominal Therapy as she studied under her guidance for 8 days in her home.  After being soaked in the traditional teachings of Miss Beatrice, Fiona returned to Australia and continued her education in this ancient modality with the Arvigo Institute (based in USA) and became a practitioner in The Arvigo Techniques of Mayan Abdominal Therapy(ATMAT).  ATMAT is the compilation of knowledge from Rosita Arvigo, who has a sturdy reputation and over thirty years of experience in healing techniques, including the mayan abdominal therapy.

The heart of this rare technique lies with rectifying female reproductive health and is a gentle non invasive external manipulation and massage process that repositions the internal organs, particularly the uterus, to promote optimum efficiency and vitality. It helps to realign a prolapsed, fallen or tilted uterus, caused by a number of factors such a significant fall, back injury, surgery or traumatic birth. It can also be due to emotional reasons, such as sexual abuse and trauma and the chronic effects of modern lifestyle.

ATMAT also supports the digestive system.  With strong links between poor digestive health and poor serotonin and dopamine production, which can lead to depression and anxiety disorders, it makes sense that the more efficient your digestive health, the better your mental health is. More than 90% of the body’s serotonin and nearly 50% of the body’s dopamine are created in the gut, and Mayan Abdominal therapy helps encourage blood flow to these digestive areas and stimulates health for neurological, psychological and immunological functioning.

This unique therapy is used to treat a wide variety of symptoms pertaining to menstruation, ovulation, endometriosis, fibroids, bladder problems, chronic miscarriages, conception/infertility problems, painful intercourse and constipation, gastritis and irritable bowel syndrome. It’s also effective in treating headaches/migraines, low energy levels, painful, number or weak legs, varicose veins, feet and lower back pain.

‘People seeking treatment come to me with a range of reproductive and digestive issues and pain, and rarely have a treatment plan from Western medicine that works for them. This technique helps address issues that modern medicine has limited options for. My clients have noticed big improvements in their symptoms in as little as one or two sessions. Using this technique, toxins are flushed from their system, hormone levels are balanced out and homeostasis is restored. It’s exciting to witness my clients’ inner equilibrium return and their symptoms decrease. It isn’t just limited to physical congestion but works on releasing emotional blockages and debris as well.

I am incredibly passionate about reconnecting women with their reproductive systems. A lot of females are lacking basic knowledge about our own bodies and cycles. It’s vital we know what is happening with our bodies in an effort to maximize our health.

It’s really easy to see why traditional Mayan healers believe that “if a woman’s uterus is out of balance, then so is she”’, states Fiona.

With a focus on women’s health and renewing inner balance, Fiona is a knowledgeable, caring practitioner that provides a myriad of alternative therapies and services via her  two practices in Kensington Park and Aldgate.

The Passing of Miss Beatrice Waight

Some of you may remember that in November 2009 I traveled to Belize in Central America and spent 8 days studying Mayan Abdominal Therapy with a traditional Mayan Healer Miss Beatrice Waight.  It is great sadness to let you know that Miss Beatrice passed away late last year.  She has left a legacy behind her and many westerners had the privilege of studying with her during her life. A book of her life and art has now been released to celebrate her achievements and continue to spread some of her gifts and knowledge.

I have been lucky enough to have been included in this book, in a section where her students could write and tell a story of their experiences of Miss Beatrice.  It is a great honor to have known this woman, to share her home, and to be able to share my experiences of her in this book.
‘Fire Heart The life and Teachings of Miss Beatrice Torres Waight, In Her Own Words’ is a direct transmission from an authentic Maya medicine woman from the rainforest of Belize, Central America. In her unique style and Belizean charm she shares her life story, her teachings, her ceremonies, her cultural traditions, her herbal knowledge and her Maya recipes with the reader in an intimate and endearing way. This book is a portal for you to enter the magical world of the Maya!’
